Blessing Box

Leigh volunteered to coordinate a team for a phase of the Blessing Box Campaign for About Face Charlotte, a non-profit dedicated to loving, listening, and serving.  The Blessing Box Campaign was a community engagement project designed to cultivate habits of kindness and compassion.  This was carried out in 3 phases.  Phase 1 distributed over 2,500 boxes across the city in homes, businesses, and places of worship.  When an act of kindness was performed or received it was written down on a strip of paper provided and placed in one of thebox.  Phase 2 involved collecting the boxes and constructing a “Wall of Compassion,” a visual reminder of our need for acts of kindness, displayedat the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center.

Phase 3, in which Leigh coordinated one of the 7 art teams, involved taking the strips of paper from the boxes of the deconstructed wall and creating works of art. The work her team undertook, using volunteers from the community, was to create with the “blessing strips” a skyline of Charlotte infused with the blessings on those slips of paper.  Other teams made quilts, fashion designs, architectural models, and different collages, all of which were displayed in Spirit Square.
